Maaaadddddeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Maaaaaaadddddddddeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaa! This is God. Listen to me Madea, I have an important message for you. You must go to camp, Madea! No, no, do not ask why. It is your destiny, Madea. You must go to camp and reach out to a group of juvenile delinquents. You must make them love you, Madea! Why? Because you will need their help to stop the mining company from taking over the camp! You must save the camp, Madea! Chief St. Cloud needs you! He cannot do it alone!
Oh, and after that, please save Christmas. That is all. Love, God.

Oh god. Ernest movies were my brother's FAVORITE THING EVER when we were kids.
I watched Ernest goes to camp about a year ago in a fit of nostalgia, and I learned a VERY important lesson.
Do not watch movies that you have seen in over a decade that you still regard fondly. It doesn't go over well.
Man I can't wait to see Madea Scurrred stupid.
/racism
I liked Tyler Perry more when he was calling himself Eddie Murphy.
On an unrelated note, "Garfield minus Garfield" may be one of the greatest things on the Internet.
Also, Madea will have officially jumped the shark when there's a "Madea Saves Kwanzaa."
When did Ernest jump the shark? Were you still on board after scared stupid? I think that's when it ended for me. According to imdb, there were a few after that. Rides Again, Goes to School, Slam Dunk Ernest, Goes to Africa. I don't believe I've seen any of those . . .
Garfield minus Garfield is a heartbreaking work of staggering genius.
I think it was "Ernest Jumps The Shark"
Here all night folks!
I haven't had the pleasure of enjoying this Madea character.
I'm waiting for more Real World commentary please.
Corey,
I think Ernest jumped the shark when Jim Varney died. Those movies weren't meant to be made for the AFI: they were made for kids.
In that same sense, the Madea movies are targeted for a VERY particular demographic, one that probably nobody on this blog is a member of. That being said, Perry's movies aren't meant for children. They're meant for adults to watch, yet there doesn't seem to be any real meat to anything he creates. It looks like it's pure pandering to the audience.
I respect Perry's wish to be an entrepreneur and make something of himself, but black people should not allow this man to be as popular and relevant as he seems to be. From what I can tell, most of his movies are garbage,* and it's not like there aren't talented African-Americans making movies. Remember that John Singleton wrote "Boyz n the Hood" when he was our age, and that's easily one of the best movies I have ever seen. Also, just about every movie Spike Lee ever did is great. How could anybody in their right mind elevate Madea to "Do the Right Thing?"
*I concede I have never seen any Tyler Perry works. However, I can draw a pretty good conclusion based on my ad nauseum viewings of commercials for "Meet the Browns" that the films suck.
Are you saying black people don't read my blog? SciSmi is clearly black, look at his profile picture!
You can't argue with logic like that!
